 Itinerary

Day 1. Arrive Paris
Be met on arrival in Paris and transferred to your hotel. Get to know your APT Tour Director and fellow travellers during a Welcome Reception this evening.
Stay: Three Night Grand City Stay: Paris, Hotel du Collectionneur Arc de Triomphe

Day 2. Paris
On a sightseeing tour of Paris this morning, see the Avenue des Champs-Élysées, one of the world’s most famous streets, and the iconic Arc de Triomphe. Later take a trip to the second level of the Eiffel Tower, where sweeping views over the city skyline await. This evening, enjoy a meal and a spectacular show at the Moulin Rouge, the iconic Parisian cabaret captured in the famous paintings of Toulouse-Lautrec.

Day 3. Paris, Freedom of Choice
On your second day in Paris, perhaps join a culinary walking tour to sample a range of the city’s fine food, enjoy a guided tour through The Louvre or soak up the village atmosphere as you explore the Montmartre district and admire the Sacré-Cœur Basilica.

Day 4. Paris, Bordeaux, Embark Ship
Travel by train to Bordeaux and on arrival, transfer to your river ship, docked on the Garonne River. After some time to settle in, get to know your fellow travellers and APT Cruise Director at a Welcome Reception this evening.

Day 5. Cadillac, Freedom of Choice
Pass sheer limestone cliffs and charming fishing huts that rise above grassy wetlands as you cruise along the Garonne River this morning. Arrive in the walled village of Cadillac, founded in 1280. Perhaps explore the village on a guided tour that includes the Bastide de Cadillac and the Old Town, before exploring the tiny medieval village of Saint-Macaire. Or you may choose to visit Château de La Brède in Sauternes for a guided tour. This well-preserved castle, surrounded by a moat and English gardens, was once the home of the great philosopher Montesquieu. Afterwards, head to Château Smith Haut Lafitte for a tour during which you’ll get to taste Sauternes’ world-famous dessert wines. Return to your ship for a Gala Welcome Dinner this evening.

Day 6. Pauillac
Take in the sights as your ship threads its way along the spectacular Gironde estuary, which cuts through the rolling countryside and alongside the historic vineyards of Aquitaine. Disembark your ship in Pauillac and journey through the famous Médoc wine region. Set to the north of Bordeaux, the Médoc’s flat, fertile grounds have become one of the most prestigious wine growing areas in the country. On a visit to a family owned cooperage today, you’ll see how wooden wine barrels are produced and learn the secrets of this time-honoured craft. A wine tasting in the charming village of Ludon concludes today’s experience.

Day 7. Blaye, Freedom of Choice, Bourg
Step ashore to discover Blaye with a walk around the 17th-century citadel. Overlooking the Gironde, this impressive structure was built by order of Louis XIV, King of France, to prevent enemies from sailing to Bordeaux. Later, perhaps travel to Cognac for a tour. Stop at Château de Cognac, a French cognac house founded in 1795 by Baron Otard. Originally built as a fortress in the 11th century, the thick walls of the cellars provide ideal conditions for ageing the brandy. Spend some time here on a tour of the storehouses followed by a cognac tasting. Or sail to the town of Bourg and take a walking tour to discover the town centre, medieval ramparts and harbour. Both groups return afterwards to the ship now docked in Bourg.

Day 8. Libourne, Saint-Émilion
Alight in Libourne and travel to World Heritage-listed Saint-Émilion. Established in the Roman period, it boasts idyllic cobbled streets, a Romanesque church, the iconic 13th-century Tour du Roy tower and historic vineyards. Head beneath the streets to discover the subterranean Monolithic Church and explore the underground cellars of Les Cordeliers, where exclusive sparkling wines have been made and aged in this 14th-century cloister since 1892. After, enjoy a glass of the sparkling wine and a selection of Saint-Émilion’s renowned macarons.

Day 9. Libourne, Freedom of Choice, Bordeaux
Perhaps join a guide for a tour of Bergerac to discover the wonderfully restored Old Town, with its stone buildings, tree-lined squares and pleasant half-timbered houses. Another option is a guided tour through Libourne. See the charming port area then stop at a caviar estate for a unique insight into how this rare delicacy is farmed. The experience culminates with a caviar tasting. Back on board, enjoy the Captain’s Farewell Dinner as you cruise towards Bordeaux. On arrival, admire the city’s lights sparkling around you on an ‘illumination’ cruise.

Day 10. Bordeaux
At the centre of the most extensive wine producing region in France lies the city of Bordeaux. Considered the cultural gem of the region, much of this beautiful city is now World Heritage-listed. In recent years, however, numerous historic sites have been revitalised with modern concepts. The best example of this is the stunning Miroir d’eau (water mirror) that you will be able to see outside the Place de la Bourse as part of your guided city tour. Other highlights of your tour include the tower of Pey-Berland, Bordeaux Cathedral, the Pont de Pierre (stone bridge) and the Esplanade des Quinconces. This evening, travel just outside the city to Château Pape Clément, a Grand Cru Classé estate flanked by some of the oldest and most prestigious vineyards in the region. Enjoy an evening of fine dining and taste some of the wines that have been produced from vines planted in the 13th century by Bertrand de Goth, who later became Pope Clement V.

Day 11. Disembark Ship, Bordeaux, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Bilbao
Stop in the seaside town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, set close to the Spanish border in French Basque country. One of the city’s most famous events in history was the marriage of Louis XIV, King of France, and the Spanish princess Maria Teresa in 1660. Your tour here includes such places as the church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste, where the famous couple were wed, and the magnificent 17th and 18th-century homes along the Quai de L’Infante. With free time for lunch, perhaps head to the bustling food market to grab a bite to eat. Continue later to the coastal city of Bilbao, located on the Bay of Biscay in the supremely beautiful region known as Basque country.

Day 12. Bilbao
A former industrial city, Bilbao has emerged as a popular centre of art and modern architecture. It is also the perfect jumping off point for your exploration of Basque country. Today, you’ll join a local guide for a panoramic city tour, followed by a walk through Casco Viejo, Bilbao’s atmospheric Old Town. Afterwards, you’ll visit the Guggenheim Museum, a museum of contemporary art housed in a famous limestone, glass and titanium building designed by famed American architect Frank Gehry. This afternoon, the time is yours to enjoy the city as you wish. Perhaps spend some more time in the Old Town. Here, you can wander along the city’s seven original streets, which date all the way back to the 14th century, roam the Plaza Nueva, the monumental city square featuring numerous restaurants and shops.

Day 13. Bilbao, San Sebastian
Stretching along the Atlantic Coast from Bilbao in Spain to Bayonne in France, the Basque region in the western Pyrenees is renowned for its golden beaches, surf culture, green mountainous landscapes and colourful fishing villages. Today, you’ll enjoy a lovely scenic drive along the Atlantic Coast to San Sebastian, one such city that epitomises the very essence of Basque country. Begin your discovery with a stroll along the four-mile oceanfront promenade that hugs the city’s three spectacular beaches. Follow with a guided walk through the Old Town, taking in the historic streets lined with Michelin-starred restaurants, Art Nouveau buildings and renowned pintxos bars. These ambient and intimate dining venues serve up the Basque equivalent of tapas, and San Sebastian’s are said to be the very best in Basque country. Enjoy some free time to explore before returning to Bilbao.

Day 14. Bilbao, Burgos, Madrid
Travel south towards Burgos. Located on the Pilgrim’s Road to Santiago de Compostela, the city’s skyline is dominated by an amazing World Heritage-listed Spanish Gothic cathedral. Stop for a walking tour and some free time for lunch before continuing to Madrid.

Day 16. Madrid, Freedom of Choice
Choose from our range of Freedom of Choice activities in Madrid today. Perhaps learn all about the traditional flavours of Spanish cuisine on a culinary tour. Or a visit to the Prado Museum may be more your style. Opened to the public in November 1819, here you can immerse yourself in one of the finest collections of European art. Alternatively, explore Bernabeu soccer stadium, home to the Real Madrid Football Club. Enjoy the final evening of your journey at leisure to further immerse yourself in the delights of the Spanish Capital.
